A Quiet Celebration of Democracy During New Year’s Eve

I wandered the streets, away from the congested shopping malls where party-goers were waiting in anticipation of the New Year. I found myself at the Democracy Monument in Bangkok, and stumbled upon a small gathering of poets and social activists. New Year’s eve.

Poetry recital, sharing sessions and mock performances that displayed their pro-democracy views. Less than 40 people in the gathering, and I believe there could have been more if it wasn’t the blatant, nearby presence of soldiers and policemen.
